Thanks to big cuts in the last Federal Budget, all departments in the Canadian Government were instructed to slash expenditures by cutting programs, and streamlining administration... And by streamlining, I mean cutting 19,200 public service positions. Being a public servant, that made me very nervous. Last week, we had a video conference with the Deputy Minister in charge of our department... They said that we were looking at about an 8.9% reduction in full-time positions. However, they also said that front-line services, the ones dealing directly with the public, would not be affected, and there will be no impact on our clients.

Turns out, that's very clever word play right there...

No, the clients shouldn't be impacted in any way... but cutting my position and taking everything we do Regionally and centralizing it in Ottawa does have a little of an effect on the ones providing the services. Namely, Me.

I'm told that it will take at least a year to get everything transferred over to Headquarters, and until then I still have a job. I am an Indeterminate (permanent) employee, and they will have to try to find me suitable work within the public service... but there are still no guarantees.

Ironically, Sunday will be my 10th Anniversary at Health Canada, in this exact position... A job I've put a lot into over those 10 years... A job that, despite the stress, I really do love.
