An Open Letter
Dear racists,

I am aware that I am a white male aged between 18 and 21. I am also aware that I appear to scowl at all times, even when smiling. I am also aware that there are a large number of students of Asian descent that attend my university, and that they take the bus, the same as I.

However, the above facts have led me to request something from you people: Do not, I repeat, NOT attempt to engage me in conversation for the purposes of commiserating with me about the 'asian invasion' of my country of choice. Similarly, do not stand next to me, having taken my uncomfortable silence as a sign of agreement, and scream at everyone of a different race that they should be 'rounded up and shot,' or that they should 'go back where they came from.'

I do not feel the same way as you do, sirs or madames. I am not, in fact, a racist. The fact that I am white should not convince you otherwise. If you have some terrible hate speech to spew, do not involve me in it simply because I am the only white Australian present. Better yet, do not spew it at all. Rest assured, the only reason I don't begin shouting at YOU is because I have a fairly good reason to assume, based on available evidence, that you are crazy and will probably stab me in the eye.

PS: Seriously, though, this has happened to me like eight times this year. Especially now that Asylum seekers, or "boat people" are back in the public consciousness. I really wish it would stop.
