What if ...... ?
What if you had a friend who had a real problem with an addiction/condition/self-destructive behaviour, and you were trying to help him through it so he could get better?
Let's say in the beginning this condition your friend has caused him to hurt someone you care a lot about. That's the reason you decided to help him out and let him get help for himself, instead of just villainizing him and beating the crap out of him. You know better than to judge people. You made sure he was taking the right steps to improve his condition and that he was on the right path to recovery. Things are going well.
Then, one year later, your friend fucks up. He was getting the help he needed, but the road to recovery is a long one, and he fucks up. His actions cause him to hurt that someone again. Conditions leading to this incident were imposed on him before he was ready, but he knows that does not justify a thing.
Now you realize one important thing.... the first time he fucked up, he was completely lost, helpless and was going in a downward spiral. This time he fucked up while trying to get better. So, does it really count as a *second offense* if he was on the road to recovery and stumbled and fell over on the way? Everyone has had to endure recovery from something in their lives during which they made mistakes and tripped along the way, right?
You know his intentions are good, and that he wants to get well. He doesn't want to hurt anyone, and knows he's done wrong.
You know this because you know him.
What would you do? Would you give him another chance? Would you let him continue in the recovery process, or would you give up on him? Think about this carefully before you answer.
