One Addiction for Another, But . . . So, I've gone and quit World of Warcraft (Warcrack). Been gone from it for over 6 months. No desire to go back. The WoW community now kinda sucks, and I think Blizz needs to re-think their business model. They've made a lot of serious changes to the game since it's creation, and in the last two expansions, they have altered the game to the point that its unrecognizable in the areas I used to enjoy most.
Now that WoW is out I've found something else on the computer that is eating up what little time giving up that time vacuum freed up. But, in this case, unlike WoW eating a monthly stippend like a bumm'n roomie, this one actually helps pay the bills. It was instrumental in getting my recent promotion/raise.
VBA - Visual Basic for Applications
It started out writing the code for two of the several Excel workbooks we use in our department to make it far more efficient to do our work. This was the first time any file in our department had VBA applied to it, and it took a little over a week of research, writing, testing and troubleshooting to create the over 64 pages of solid code. All that work was worth it since these improvements save well over 4 man hours every week and has improved the reliability of our figures.
Access would be a better way to go, but unfortunately due to the way the IT department configured the servers Excel workbooks is the option open to us. I don't know enough about SharePoint Services, yet, to make the data work from an Access application to the server.
With the success of those two projects, and the fact that there are very few people in the building that are as adept with Office applications, let alone VBA macro code, they made me the unofficial information systems specialist of sorts. I have been tasked to develop four new Excel based information systems for them and upgrade two other information systems to use VBA macros.
Normally what I've been tasked to do would be difficult for casual users to use through the usual spreadsheet interface. I have a few tricks up my sleeve that I've been itch'n to actually use instead of just wondering how to use them. Unfortunately it means that I will have to code the data handlers and event handlers myself instead of letting a program like Access handle it for me. So far the database calls for a little over 680 data handlers.
Needless to say, that part of the coding I've been procrastinating about.
Before I acually code all of that, I'll build a smaller version with the data types I'll be using so that I can perfect the technique, implementations, and test the performance of the system while not wasting time having to re-write 680+ handlers.
